School Travel Plan

17 Silver Star kitemark

The main aim of a School Travel Plan is to promote safe, sustainable travel to school. It also promotes active travel as a lifestyle choice, therefore aiming to impact the health of Bedonwell families. The Travel Plan is a policy document, which sets out the school’s aims and actions to that end. Each year our Travel Plan is reviewed and new targets set.

We have a member of staff who is the Travel Plan Leader, and a Travel Plan Working Party of people, including members of the School Council, who jointly ensure that the Travel Plan aims are achieved.

We run Cycle and Scooter training sessions each Bike Week (in June). Through the Travel Plan we have secured free Cycle and Scooter racks at the school entrance.

We have also held a Travel Club, where children can do a range of activities with a travel and safety theme. One activity is to produce posters to display on the perimeter fence reminding pedestrians how to use the School Crossing Patrol or to pick up their dog’s mess from the pavement.

Awards- We are part of the STARS scheme with Transport for London, and have achieved Bronze and Silver Awards for our Travel Plan work. We have also achieved Walking Beacon School status for South-East London. This was achieved because we have increased our sustainable travel numbers by 22%, and have been able to maintain this for a few years.

We have had lots of visitors into school to promote school travel issues, including a representative of Charlton Community Project, our School Crossing Patrol Officers, and even Strider the Walk to School mascot himself!

The Travel Plan Working Party have also campaigned for additional road safety measures immediately outside the school. We are currently in the process of requesting pavement widening (for which 400+ petition signatures were sent off) in order to secure safer travel for our families.

The work done through the Travel Plan benefits the whole school community and it’s neighbours. We work closely with Bedonwell Junior School, with many initiatives being joint ventures. The Travel Plan plays a valuable part in the effective work of Bedonwell Infant & Nursery School.

There are many activities and projects, which we have completed to promote sustainable travel. The Travel Plan was launched with a scheme called WOW (Walk Once a Week or Walk Whenever you can). This scheme rewards sustainable travel. At Bedonwell Infant and Nursery School numbers of children using sustainable travel is recorded weekly and Walk to School badges are awarded to the class with the highest number of children. Classes are also rewarded with certificates (designed by children through a competition).

We support all International and National Walk to School Weeks, and all classes complete activities and curriculum- related work for this theme. Our aim is always to get more families to leave their car at home, which is why we promote these events.

We support Road Safety Week each November. Road Safety is a huge problem with such a large school, so the Street Feet resource (provided by Bexley Council) is used with each class to teach basic road safety skills. This resource is also used as part of our weekly Family Pedestrian Skills Club.
